Joakim Stephenson

 

Joakim was trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School in Stockholm between 1983-1991. He joined the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1991 and became a solist in 2007. He was a member of Ballet Monte Carlo 2008-2009 and guested with Hongkong Ballet in august after his retirement in june 2016.  He was also a member of the small touring  company Stockholm59°North, comprised of soloists and principals of the Royal Swedish Ballet.

Stockholm59°north commissioned Joakim to choreograph “Sans Sable”for the outdoor stage, Vitabergsparken in Stockholm, 2016 as well as adding three of his pieces to their repertoire.  He choreographed “Onapers” for the performance “Through the choreographer’s eye” on Fårö that was later broadcast on swedish television SVT2.  In 2004, Joakim choreographed the movie Soulman, and in 2015 the dancemovie Sand, both broadcast on  swedish television SVT2.  He performed his  piece ”Butterflykiss”  at the Lindbury studio, Covent Garden, in 2005.

In 2005 he was an initiator of  the summercourse “Gotland International Dance Seminar” and has staged Alexander Ekmans ballet Tyll in Chicago for Joffery Ballet, for the Ballet of Flanders and will stage it later this year in Russia and in Houston, Texas.  Joakim created a number for Melodifestival 2017.

Joakim lives in Stockholm and works as  freelance choreographer, choreographer assistant to Alexander Ekman and teacher.   He has recently created a ballet course for adults  and is an ABT Certified Teacher in pre-primary through level 3 of the ABT National Training Curriculum.
